It is a wonderful occurrence when you can share something you love with someone who is as enamored of it as you are. This kind of connection is one of the joys of life.
In a world where we are digitally connected more than ever before, are we losing the personal connection? We scroll through social media, “liking” posts from people we’ve never laid eyes on. People we’ve never spoken to. We only know their digital identities.
The art of civil discourse is fading fast. Sharing opinions and perspectives on a topic is essential to our continued intellectual growth. You don’t learn anything new when you only speak with those who always agree with you.
In addition, the process of reading, contemplating then discussing supports mental health, mental acuity, spirituality, social connection and is just plain enjoyable!
Book clubs are a container for all of these things. They build community while providing a place where diversity of opinion is welcomed and openly discussed. They expose you to books or articles that may not have been on your reading list, but can broaden your literary horizons and have new insights opened to you.
These are the main reasons I requested to start the BCD Book Club. I envision a community of Buddhists who want to explore different aspects of their spirituality through reading, reflecting and sharing. I welcome a wee bit of spirited debate among a group united by mutual respect for each other.
My plan is to keep the meetings interactive and engaging. You’ll not find tired old tomes on the reading list. We will alternate between books and articles to keep things interesting. I welcome suggestions to the list always, and this will be a large factor in determining the direction of the club going forward.
BCD members are invited to enjoy this perk of membership. Join at any time, and attend as frequently as you are able.
We will meet via Zoom on Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30pm EST. Our first meeting will be on December 2, 2025. The assigned reading will be an article to start us off.
